The title "hakim nanjunda" (doctor nanjunda) was an honour given by Tippu Sultan to Sri Srikanteshwara, the diety of Nanjangud Temple. When Tippu's royal ehephant had lost its eyesight, many attempts of treatment was done but without scuccess. On suggestion of wise persons, he prayed to Sri Srikanteshwara with devotion and the eyesight of the royal elephant got restored. Because of this, he called Sri Srikanteshwara as "hakim nanjunda" with honour and devotion. He presented precious necklace and installed a Shiva Linga of jade stone as a tribute.
